Challenge

In this business, we are used to seeing crawl spaces and basements with moisture problems all of the time, almost daily. However, it is not all that often when we get huge puddles of water throughout a crawlspace, which happened to be exactly what this homeowner was dealing with. There were several pools of water all over the crawlspace, which could end up causing mold to grow and possibly even future foundation issues.

The biggest problem in this project was determining where exactly all of this water was coming from and the best way to keep the water from getting into the crawlspace. Thankfully our Service Design Specialist did not have too much trouble in figuring out the best way to do this. With a sump pump and some CleanSpace, our Specialist knew that this crawl space would be back to a healthy state.

Solution

As mentioned previously, the solution to fix this crawl space for good is to install a sump pump to pump out the water, as well as our CleanSpace liner. Between these two products, the crawlspace will be in some pretty good hands! The first thing we have to do is to make sure the crawlspace is not too wet or flooded because it is much more difficult to install the products. Fortunately, there were a few weeks between the initial inspection and when the work was completed.

When our crew arrived, they went straight to work on putting in the sump pump. The sump pump is usually installed first so that when the CleanSpace is rolled out, it can be cut around the sump pump. This is important because it allows for a better seal than if it was installed the other way around. Once the crew had the SuperSump pump in the ground, they began to roll out the CleanSpace liner, which really holds a crawl space together. The CleanSpace is extremely important because it is what keeps the crawl space separate from the ground.

This photo shows a lot of evidence of increased moisture levels in this crawlspace. The most telling sign is that of the falling insulation. When the humidity is high enough, the water searches for places to stick and soak into. More often than not, the water sucks into the insulation and floor joists, where mold can easily grow.

This is one of the puddles that was referred to in the case study. It is not a small puddle, but rather a pretty large pool of water. The presence of this much water is never a good thing because it usually means the humidity is high and is likely to continue rising.

Here is another view of the crawlspace before our crew had performed any work on it. This picture does not show any water or moisture, but it does show the condition of the crawl space prior to our CleanSpace being installed.

Here is the installed SuperSump pump in the crawlspace. This pump helps to push out any water that drains from under the CleanSpace liner. The pump leads to an area outside where the water will not make its way back towards the house.

One last view of the installed CleanSpace. Our crews do a great job with laying the CleanSpace very tight on the floors and walls so that it is much more difficult to pull the CleanSpace from the walls and to keep it from tearing as well.
